Quality of Care at Merit Health Biloxi Helped Ease Patient's Concerns

Charlie Dauphin, a Biloxi resident, recently had surgery at Merit Health Biloxi. Having surgery can be intimidating for anyone, but for Charlie, having surgery was especially nerve-wracking due to her rare blood disorder. At age 13, she was diagnosed with neutropenia, a rare blood disorder that causes her to have too few neutrophils–white blood cells that are essential for fighting certain infections.
Having frequented hospitals for her childhood, Charlie said she was scared to have surgery at first. However, after this recent experience at Merit Health Biloxi, she feels more at ease. Throughout her surgery experience, she encountered several departments, including the ER, radiology, surgery, women’s services, environmental services and dietary services.
“I didn't have a bad experience,” she recounted. “Anybody who came into my presence made my stay easier to deal with. At times I was in pain and was homesick, and the kindness and respect of the nurses and staff went a long way. They would share recipes with me, and we would talk about our Pinterest posts.”
Charlie, a wife and mother, often felt homesick during her week-long stay at Merit Health Biloxi, and her husband and children were able to visit her. “The staff treated both me and my husband like family. They brought him blankets and pillows and made sure he was comfortable.”
During her stay, Charlie says her physician, Keith Goodfellow, M.D., an obstetrics and gynecology physician and independent member of Merit Health Biloxi’s medical staff, and all her nurses were very attentive. The nurses checked on her often, and Dr. Goodfellow followed up frequently. “He would even call me and check on me at home. He was there several times a day to make sure I was okay, and he brought in any specialist necessary to ensure my recovery.”
Now that she’s home and recovered, Charlie explains she’s doing very well.
“I would go to Merit Health Biloxi again. Everybody there was professional and courteous. They treated me and my family with utmost respect and made me feel like family. I would tell anyone in the community to go there.”
