Recently, Merit Health River Oaks and Merit Health Woman’s Hospital welcomed back dozens of former neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients and their families for a special NICU reunion celebration honoring the journeys of some of the hospital’s tiniest patients.
The event brought together NICU graduates, parents, nurses, physicians, therapists and staff members for a day filled with smiles, hugs, laughter and heartfelt reunions. Families had the opportunity to reconnect with the caregivers who supported them during one of the most emotional and challenging times in their lives, while staff members were able to see firsthand how much the children have grown and thrived.
“This event is incredibly meaningful for our NICU teams,” said Stephanie Williamson, executive director of women's services at Merit Health River Oaks & Merit Health Woman's Hospital. “Our nurses, physicians and staff build strong bonds with these families during their NICU journey, and it is so rewarding to see these children healthy, happy and thriving months and years later.”
The reunion featured family-friendly activities, refreshments, photo opportunities and special moments for families to share stories and memories from their NICU experience. For many parents, the event served as a powerful reminder of the compassion, knowledge and support they received while their babies were in the NICU.
“Our NICU team cares deeply about every patient and family we serve,” said Williamson. “Seeing former NICU babies come back running, laughing, and playing is a celebration of hope, resilience, and the impact of compassionate healthcare.”
The NICUs at the Merit Health Flowood hospitals provide specialized care for premature and critically ill newborns, delivering advanced neonatal services close to home for families throughout the region.
