Merit Health Wesley Partners with American Red Cross to Host Community Blood Drive
5/24/2018
Hattiesburg -- Merit Health Wesley and the American Red Cross are joining forces to host a community blood drive on Friday, June 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Glenn Smith Room at Merit Health Wesley, 5001 Hardy Street.
Blood is a perishable product that can only come from volunteer blood donors. With someone in the U.S. needing blood every two seconds, blood products must be constantly replenished.
“Merit Health Wesley is committed to strengthening our community and helping meet patient needs through blood donations,” said Daren Carley, Administrative Director of Laboratory Services at Merit Health Wesley. “This blood drive is our way of giving the community and our staff an opportunity to help save lives.”
Donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, B negative and A negative. According to the Red Cross, type O negative is the universal blood type that can be safely transfused to anyone, and is often used to treat trauma patients. Blood is routinely transfused to patients with cancer and other diseases, premature babies, organ transplant recipients and trauma victims.
