Mardi Gras Safety Tips
2/18/2022
Mardi Gras is a big time of year here in Biloxi and the surrounding cities along the Gulf Coast. Every weekend there are balls, parades, and parties. While partaking in festive, Mardi Gras traditions, it’s important to do all you can to make sure you and your loved ones stay safe. Here are a few safety tips.
Educate children on what to do if you get separated
Instruct children to go immediately to the nearest police officer. Have them memorize their name, and the name and the phone number of a guardian. To be extra cautious, you can put an identity card in children’s pockets with their name, address, a telephone number and name of a guardian. It’s also a good idea to select a landmark as a meeting spot in case of separation. This is recommended not just for kids, but for everyone in your group.
Do not follow floats or throw anything at float riders
Being in front of or behind a parade float is not only dangerous, but could also get you fined by police. Stay out of the street/parade route!
Dress flexible
We never know from hour to hour or minute to minute what kind of weather we will be experiencing here on the coast, so come prepared. You will be outside for hours if you’re watching a parade. Dress in layers and bring a rain jacket. Also, bring sunscreen, hats, and water.
Avoid carrying bags, purses, and cash
It’s not a bad idea to bring a tote bag for the throws you are collecting and a few necessary items, but place any important items such as wallets or phones in your front pockets, as pickpocketing can occur at parades or events.
Don’t become distracted by cell phones or other devices
Surroundings can change quickly and throws are being continuously tossed from floats, so stay alert and off your phones and other devices.
Stay in well lit areas
Always stay with your group and keep to well-lit areas. This is an excellent general rule for safety no matter what night time event you are attending.
Know your limits
When it comes to alcohol, if you choose to drink, do so safely and only if you are over 21. Remember not to bring any glass containers and always have a designated driver.
Following safety tips can help keep you and your loved ones safe on parade day however, if you or someone around you is experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 immediately or go to the emergency room.
